Red Hair Highlights

I keep trying to find information on the genes that cause rare highlights in her hair. But whenever I search I get the sites about hair dye. I have very dark brown (I and everyone says black) I have red highlights in my hair and it is really important in my beard. I really would like information on the genetics behind it. My mother has dark hair too, but not a trace of red and my father has blonde hair. Is it a mixture of 2 strokes? Recessive? Mutation.?
