Folic Acid Hair Loss

Posted on January 10, 2010.
Folic Acid Hair LossIs low folate causes hair loss?

Sunday I started having hair loss. And a significant amount of it too! Day after day, hundreds (probably 300 hairs are falling!) My hair is very thick, and I start to tell a big difference. I went to the doctor today because I think it might be my thyroid. After blood work, he showed my thyroid was normal, but my folic acid was quite low. Even though I know it is true that some folic acid can cause hair loss, can it cause IT quickly? Has anyone ever experienced this? I am 25 and this is the strangest thing and most complex.

The type of hair loss that causes excessive excretion is called telogen effluvium. It seems that yours came suddenly and rapidly. For this reason there may be another reason other than folic acid low. With telogen effluvium, the hair falls out before it actually enters on a resting (telogen) phase for 1-3 months, and discounts. Thinking back to the month before delivery may provide clues. Any type of change, disruption or imbalance that the body has trouble adjusting to this condition can cause. Common causes include vaccination, vaccination against influenza, medications, infection, virus, high fever, medical attention, dental care, exposure to toxins or allergens, trauma, extreme stress, etc. Because these things could have happened months before the fall began people often don t of them relate to hair loss.
Low levels of folic acid can cause a type of anemia that can cause hair loss. If your folic acid levels are dangerously low you would probably be other symptoms too. You may have other deficiencies such as vitamin B12, zinc, iron, etc. as well as folic acid may also contribute to hair loss. You can learn more about the types and causes of hair loss in women on the links below.

It seems that the answer is yes, here is an article I found which may be helpful:

There are many factors that contribute to hair loss, hormones, heredity, stress, illness, diet and poor hair care can help to cause hair loss. Diet, stress and disease conditions are temporary and once you drop the constraint or cure the disease, changing diet, things should in most cases, return to normal.

Folic acid has long been hailed as a cornerstone of women's health, especially for pregnant women.
You realize that folic acid may also play an important role in maintaining your hair on top of your head where it belongs? Take vitamins folic acid for prevention of hair loss can not only greatly reduce your chances of suffering hair loss to begin with, and to help prevent future hair loss.

Folic acid plays an important role in preventing hair loss. Another important nutrient that causes hair loss prevention is Biotin. Vitamin B-6 and B-12, biotin and folic acid all help to maintain the hemoglobin in the blood hemoglobin molecule in red blood cells that contains iron. The main function of hemoglobin to carry oxygen from the lungs and tissues of the body, then hair and skin may suffer if these vitamins are lacking in our body.

Folic acid is found in various foods, including vegetables, especially green vegetables like kale, spinach, beets and chard, potatoes, fruit and cereal grain products, and offal (eg liver or kidney). It is best to eat fruits and vegetables whenever possible since they contain the most vitamins.

I have low folic acid as well and come to think of it, I noticed that my hair falls over.
