Doty Horn, director of color and design for Benjamin Moore travels the land in search of trends. She works on color trends for two full years in advance. PowerPoint Presentation Doty popular events collected worldwide showed any chairs that look like nests of furniture made from PVC pipes melted. Doty distills all these wacky, out there on the movement patterns of colors usable for real life. Horn analysis identifies the colors that will be popular in everything from cars to appliances to home accessories and interior decoration.

According to Benjamin Moore Color Pulse 2009, there are four main color trends that will be dominating our environment next year and beyond.


Raw: Horn says this palette is derived from the push toward minimalism, pairing life reduced to its most authentic. Horn said this palette is derived from the raw wood, concrete blocks and other "make-do" materials and includes shades of white, sand and gray.

Urban Silence Horn said this group of colors reflects the changing boundaries between life in the city and life outside the city. "That's where the trees become houses and houses become trees," she said.


In more urban buildings incorporate rooftop gardens and shipping containers are converted into living spaces, the city becomes softer, more livable. Horn said this palette reflects these changes by mixing the gray tones of urban life with bright colors like green, organic, rust and terra cotta.

Simplexity: To understand the color palette, think of the pixels that make up a computer screen: thousands of tiny dots in different colors coming together to form a whole. These are colors that have more to them than meets the eye.


"The colors here are very complex, they have much depth to them, but they are easy to use, so that some of the simplicity of this" Horn said. For example, she says, think of a color looks black, but it's really purple. "It is almost black, but it has a blue background and red continues to do so and it just has a rich texture and a rich landscape, and how the light hits it, you begin to see the nuances of how those colors flip underneath. "
